Wikipedia Article:
What is Trisquel? Trisquel is a fully free GNU/Linux distribution. It is currently 1 of 8 endorsed GNU/Linux distributions endorsed by the Free Software Foundation ( The current version of Trisquel at the time of this writing is based of Ubuntu 9.10. It is made ( by copying the official Ubuntu repositories and removing any proprietary software via a blacklist. The Linux kernel is also cleaned of any binary blobs.

Why should I use Trisquel? I never got around to really finishing my gNewSense review (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=199). The main reason was that it was really frustrating as a distro to use. It is based of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (which is no longer supported). Almost all of the software is out of date and I had to compile a bunch of software to get my programs to the latest version. Long story short I had lots of problems. Trisquel is fully free so if you care about freedom in your software it has all the advantages of gNewSense. However, it is much more active and up to date. New versions usually come out 3 - 4 months after an Ubuntu release (although the current one is a little delayed since they want to make it a good LTS). Again, not to hate on gNewSense but when you used it felt exactly like a clone to Ubuntu with stuff removed. So in a sense it just felt like you were using a old distro that had been slightly neutered :(. Trisquel on the other hand actually adds some enhancements.

My current opinion I have started to drift further and further towards software freedom. I started using Ubuntu in college (I am a grad now). As I see the damage proprietary software can do I have moved more and more towards free software. Trisquel is an awesome distro. It's not perfect but I really really like it. I think I'm going to be using it for a long time :)

thats awesome! it's true what he says about gnewsense though.... felt like ubuntu but with parts removed.... so its a smart thing that trisquel is doing following its own style. and it looks slick tooo!!! free is not supposed to look so good =)
