... to have done this on purpose, but it works out wonderfully on their end, and horribly for consumers! Not to mention should be against the law (Ashley, want to chime in?)

Thats really terrible. All of a sudden your $400 locked-in computer becomes completely worthless because some company says it is? This is why I don't buy expensive phones (yes, the iphone is ~$600 unsubsidized (ie you pay for it over time in bills), I think that counts). But if you just have to game.... (build a desktop and pirate Modern Warfare 2!)

In this case this is less of a legal issue and more a wallet issue. If a company is going to act in this way the solution which will work the fastest and work everytime is boycott. Now this does not happen because people put things like the ability to play Halo over there moral choices. This then leads the company do more crappy things like this. If everyone sued, stop buying and rioted, it would stop in a heart beat. Now the reason why this is not illegal is when you buy the thing you sign a contact which can be summed up as "you do anything against all these rules, then you have no legal standing against us." It sucks but its what happens when you go this far into proprietary products. I mean the wii, xbox and PS3 could all decide to stop production games tomorrow and what could you do.
