 Uses - DVD backup
This is one I have in the bag. So my normal DVD backup workflow looks something like one of the following:
Insert DVD > transcode with Handbrake > watch digitally. -OR- Insert DVD > rip with MacTheRipper > burn to DVD > watch via dvd player or digitally >>>>OR (rip with MacTheRipper) > wait > transcode with handbrake > watch digitally.
On linux:
Handbrake for transcoding (it is a multiplatform app and for me works on Mac >= Linux >> Windows.) K9Copy for ripping around CSS or Region restrictions. Even better than MacTheRipper.
Happy backing-up!

 Re: Uses - DVD backup
Never tried handbrake but I will recommend K3b ( http://k3b.plainblack.com/). Licensed under GPL.

I LOVE handbrake, it works really well and is noob friendly.
